Hi stranger! Wanna meet me?
What’s the meaning of social? The real, true, original one?
Today we use this word only when, two or more people, share some information, through some data cable.
Not anymore physical connection, or presence.
Instead, being social should involve at least two real people close each other, doing whatever.
Yes, also that, is kind of social activity.
It allows you to go around and poke with other people. People you don’t kmow, which are not your friends on facebook or followers on twitter. This is the first feature I like: meet new people.
I know internet let you already meet new people, strangers from all over the world, but this is a mirage, cheating the system. HERE I depicted this concept, which from now one I define the NEAR-REAL vs VIRTUAL-FAR problem.
Small world, six degrees
Basicly we should embrace the new wave of online-friends started 10-15 years ago, but never forget how important was, is, the physical connection. Have you read about the small-world theory? It studies how most of networks are built, like a huge dense local intra-connection with some occasional long-range connection. It says you know many people, which know them each other too. And you have some friend far from your local group, just one step far from your friends, through you.
This kind of system is very stable and cheap. The economic value is calculated considering the cost to build connection (imagine roads or cables cost) and the opportunity to be able to transmit an information between any two people (total connection) with the less number of hops (travel or transmission cost).
Internet is a blessing. First TV let us discover what happen anywhere in the world, making any of us a virtual citizen of the world. But TV is just one-way channel, so we received Internet. Over last few years we embraced the so-called social media and therefore we became actually a world citizen. We talk, share, see and someway manipulate EXCITING events everywhere in the world. See the point?
The excitement of everything everywhere messed up with our neighbouring. We live our life locally, we know that, but we can’t anymore enjoy it. It is not exciting or exotic or dreamy. It is just our normal life. So people give up and develop their long connection. All tools we find nowadays, have this goal .
Startups like Yobongo, Sonar or the new Mingle, are the first step in the direction to balance long and short distance connection. Citing one of them:
“We want to facilitate how people meet people, online and offline”
What I believe?
How do you enforce your need for sugar? Adding sugar or adding salt?
Same for local and long social activities. We have already both the networks, gadget are ready, technology is cheap.
We need to use deeply Internet, as ever, to build our future over-connected society, to fight ignorance and abuses.
We must take back the local space, maybe through what technology gave us at the beginning of the information/computer era: INTRANETs.
Bluetooth, RFID, local cable, hands shaking, taking picture of each other.
Digital or not.
And make the most of it.
